U.S. Embassy Warns of Terrorist Plots and Attacks Government Elements
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued an urgent security warning on Monday (April 20, 2026), stating that Iraqi militias aligned with Iran continue to plot additional attacks against U.S. citizens and targets associated with the United States throughout Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region. In its statement, the embassy accused "elements associated with the Iraqi government" of providing "political, financial, and operational cover" for these militias, in an unprecedented accusation that deepens the crisis of trust between Baghdad and Washington. This warning came just three days after the U.S. Treasury Department designated seven commanders from four Iran-backed Iraqi militias as terrorists, as part of the "Economic Fury" campaign launched by the Trump administration against Iranian influence in the region.
